Volunteering

Amisfield garden is very largely run by and for volunteers organised by our full-time Volunteer Coordinator. Over 70 individuals have volunteered with us recently of whom around 50 attend regularly at one or more of our four half-day sessions each week. Volunteers contribute over 6,000 man hours per year, working to develop and maintain the garden. We welcome individual volunteers of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, and parties from primary schools to large businesses wishing to develop team building skills.

With the employment of a full-time Volunteer Coordinator from 2013, the volunteer project has expanded rapidly and we now employ a second part-time member of staff to help with our volunteers, particularly those with learning difficulties. Of our regular volunteers, eleven have been referred to us from service providers as people with additional support needs. These individuals are offered the chance to participate in the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society’s Grow and Learn programme which is a specially adapted horticulture course for people with learning difficulties.
The satisfaction of a job well done

Why do people volunteer with us? Well, come and try it yourself to find out! There is a lot of satisfaction in working as part of a team to create a beautiful garden for others to enjoy, and Amisfield is a wonderful place to spend a couple of hours in the tranquil peace and security of a walled garden. There are jobs for all abilities, from dead-heading roses or pricking out seedlings to picking fruit and, if you feel like it, the more physically demanding jobs like digging, weeding and trimming hedges.

In addition to the actual gardening there are other events organised for volunteers. There are regular Design Evenings when we meet to discuss new developments and plan the jobs for the coming month. We also organise training days to learn new skills and visits to other garden projects or nurseries to learn how other people work in horticulture. And then there are some purely social events such as the summer barbeque and the Christmas lunch.

Volunteer times are: Monday and Friday 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.
and Wednesday and Saturday 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
